Additional Information

Description

This property is one of the oldest pieces of farmland in Northfield and has had just three owners since the early 1800s. It initially included a barn and farmhouse, pasture land, and blueberries. We purchased it in 1986 and improved the blueberry field with hand cutting and free-burning. Garden spaces for vegetables have been enriched with seaweed, horse manure, leaves and compost through 2013, when we moved to Belfast.
We sold organic blueberries to a blueberry cooperative and most recently to an organic farmer in Cherryfield. Vegetable and apple harvests have been for our use.

The woodland, which has a woods road that runs half way to the back of the property, was selectively harvested for white pine in early 1980s (prior to our purchase). The woodland has been under a forest management plan for hardwood and wildlife since 2009. We conducted a softwood harvest in 2012 to remove dead and dying trees and allow for hardwood release. This is one of the largest pieces of wooded land left in Northfield and the second largest tract of organic blueberry and farmland in the area. We would like to see it farmed and managed to its full potential.

The house was constructed in 1978, using beams from the old barn and farmhouse. We added on a screened porch and eating area to the back of the house and finished off the attic area to create a bedroom and partial bath with balcony looking over the back. Primary heat is a wood stove with oil fueled forced hot air.

There are six rooms on the ground floor: kitchen, cathedral-ceiling living room, small bedroom or office, master bedroom and bath and another large bedroom and or office. Second floor is partial on either side of cathedral ceiling living room -- a sleeping loft over the kitchen and a bedroom and half bath over the master bedroom, bath, and large bedroom.

Improvements include a shed off the kitchen, a screened porch off the living room and a balcony off the upstairs bedroom. Kitchen counters are slate with farmhouse sink.
