Description of farming experience

BOLD Meadow Farms is within its first year of trial production, but is inspired from my 12-years of practice as a landscape architect and 25-years as an avid gardener. I have previously managed a landscaping business for 6-years and provided grounds maintenance for the Hermitage, a pastoral historic museum with an early-colonial period garden.

Farming practices description

Traditional sod farming has been found to deplete top soils, particularly for deep-cut sod. My method of production preserves the topsoil in place and utilizes food waste compost as the growing media for sod production. Our sod is composed of custom seed blends of native and adapted grasses as well as flowering forbs.

Planned farming enterprises

  • Meadow Sod

Farming enterprises description

BOLD Meadow Farm is within its first year of trial production of meadow sod - a sustainable lawn alternative. Unlike traditional sod farming, this method of growing preserves prime agricultural soils and utilizes food waste compost to rebuild soils within our built environment. We grow, install, and maintain meadow sod as a convenient solution to replace your lawn with native grasses and flowers - empowering all to address climate change within their own backyard.

Infrastructure needed

  • Water source for irrigation

Business planning description

I have completed a business planning course through the New Entry Sustainable Farming program, hosted through Tufts University, and am within my first year of trial production at their incubator farm in Beverly, MA.

Additional Information

BOLD Meadow Farm aims to revolutionize the way we think of the American lawn for the twenty-first century! It is clear that the days of daily irrigation, weekly mowing, and monthly fertilization are no longer sustainable (for our planet and for our sanity in this busy world). We are New England's sole provider of meadow sod– a carpet of low-growing native grasses and flowers that provide impact from day one. Our meadows have been custom designed to meet a variety of customer preferences and environmental conditions.

We believe that meadow sod can empower anyone to support pollinators, sequester carbon, rebuild soil health, and reduce water use - without the patience needed from seeding and the cost associated with containerized planting. Our sod production provides an established meadow at one-third the cost of potted plants and 2-years quicker than seeding.

BOLD Meadow Farm has been refining its production over the last year in Beverly, MA, and is eager to increase production capacity through a like-minded land owner.
