At the site of Mountain Home Farm in Tunbridge, VT we are offering for rent our pasture, hayland, creamery and farmhouse to a motivated individual or family. The creamery is a fully certified and approved grade A creamery facility with a processing room, milk room and dry milking parlor for up to 13 cows at a time. We were producing for retail sale; butter, buttermilk and ricotta cheese here until this past spring. Some of the dairy equipment remains installed and for sale including a 200 gallon sunset bulk tank, surge alamo vacuum pump and 10 gallon butter churn. We also have guernsey cows and heifers for sale. There is approximately 25 acres of pasture on hilly terrain with fencing in various states of repair. Over the last five years the pasture has come from an overgrazed state to a productive and more resilient state though intensive rotations and adding compost. We were supporting 25 cows, 5 pigs and two horses from early may through October on this land. There is also about 20 acres of land suitable to hay or a crop.We usually get two cuts off of the hay field and then graze the third cut in the late fall. There is an enormous four story barn with a concrete barn yard that has a run in shelter into the bottom. This is where we overwintered our cows.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone ready to take the jump into running their own farm with plans for value added products. The creamery is a turn key space ready to be occupied. We are looking for someone who has a clear plan to take advantage of each of these farm resources. Someone with whom we can collaborate and share a larger farm vision with. We have our own plans for the remaining parts of the farm and a partnership could be forged. There is also the possibility for further ownership or management in the future.
Also a part of this farm rental opportunity is the 4-5 bedroom farmhouse right across the road from the creamery. It is a large and open space from the early 1800’s. It has many rooms and storage spaces, an open kitchen arrangement and large central hall. There is also space on the farmstead for someone to grow a garden.
The tunbridge community is close knit and very supportive. There are lots of small farms in Tunbridge itself and surrounding towns which work to support each other in various ways.
