Description

Background and Information:

The East Quabbin Land Trust is offering land for lease to a farmer or farm entity interested in pursuing their agricultural business in Petersham, Massachusetts. The ideal farmer will manage a diversified farm using regenerative farming techniques to improve soil fertility and productivity, such as no-till and cover cropping practices.  A market vegetable production, portable chicken, berry or orchard operation are options on this farmland. Potential direct markets are Quabbin Retreat, Petersham Country Store, Quabbin Harvest and Insight Meditation Society. The farm is located on North Main Street approximately 7 minutes south of Route 2.

Up to four acres are available on the Seven Acre Preserve. The entire property is prime agricultural soils. The soil categorization is Marlow fine sandy loam with areas of slope between 3-8%. The fields have been rejuvenating from commercial corn production since 2017 with the pasture grass crop being cut and left on site to build soil organic matter and water holding capacity.

The East Quabbin Land Trust maintains a small pollinator meadow and will install a small blueberry and strawberry picking patch at the south entrance with its kiosk. The north entrance is expected to be the best access point for the farming operation. There is a conservation restriction on the seven acres held by the Town of Petersham that limits the property uses, but includes temporary infrastructure, such as greenhouses, hoop houses, portable chicken coops and irrigation infrastructure. Housing is not available on-site. Water is currently not available on-site, but the addition of a well is possible in coordination with the successful lessee.
